Introducing Website Grader TV! Home Improvement Contractor Website Review

I am pleased to announce Website Grader TV on the Small Business Market Domination blog!

Each week I will review a small business website and the effectiveness of its inbound marketing strategies.

I’m going to go deep into why a website may or may not be a lead generating, inbound marketing machine.  What steps can be taken to supercharge the website, start the leads pouring in, and ultimately make the phone ring!

Website Grader TV Home Improvement Contractor ReviewI’ve been wanting to start video blogging for along time, and based on the awesome feedback from the community, now was the time to launch this puppy!

Today, I’m taking on a regional home improvement contractor’s site, PJ Fitzpatrick Inc.  They have been around since 1980, and in the last few years have poured tons of money into radio and television advertising.  They also do a fantastic job of branding their vehicles, which I can certainly appreciate.

I’m going to put their website to the test to see how well they are getting found, promoting their content, and converting website visitors to leads!

The Fine Print

Disclaimer:  Visitors of the Small Business Market Domination blog, this is my first video blog :)   I shot it on one take.  I was scared for my life, but figured this was only my first video blog, so why not run with it?  I can tell you right now people, that I’m probably making every potential video blogging mistake in the book, such as:

  • Not looking at the camera.
  • Moving around like I just ate my third bowl of sugary sweet cereal!
  • Making weird noises like Ummmmmm, Ahhhhhhh.  There are probably others!
  • Kept looking down at my notes….bobbleheads don’t shake this much!
  • The video is waaaaaay too long.  Had to break it down into two parts to fit it on YouTube.
  • There is decent amount of energy at times, but not consistently enough.
  • Did I say not looking at the camera???

All that being said, I am pleased with the first take results, knowing it’s episode numero uno, and will hopefully have plenty of time to practice if you guys don’t give me the hook ;)

Asking for Your Help!

Speaking of you guys, I really would like your feedback on this video.  Along with the obvious, what else can I improve?  What would you like to see?  What did you like?  What needs to get the boot?  Any and all input from the community would be greatly appreciated!

Lastly, I just want to say that holy cow, making a video is not easy!  Well, the actually turning on the camera, hitting record, that was easy.  I had stage fright the moment the little red light came on!  I mean come on, I’ve spoken in front of hundreds of people, this should be easy, right? Wrong!  It will get better with practice, but I have to say how much respect I now have for the people who do this all the time!

So, here for your viewing pleasure is the inaugural episode of Website Grader TV!

Congratulations on your first video Adam, great job!

Because you are reviewing a site I would think that you would need to revert to notes if you are trying to go back over what you have already assessed in order to share with your readers and viewers your summary. Overall I think you did a good job and trust me, you’ll become a natural over time. Isn’t it fun!

I took a quick look at PJ Fitzpatrick’s site and overall, it has pretty much everything laid out if I were searching for what they have to offer. Being a consumer if I were searching for what they sell, I like the different tabs across the top of the page for all their different products.

I love that on their blog they give prizes for answering the questions which is really enticing people to get involved. Great idea.

Thanks for sharing this and again, great job on the video. I have a feeling this the first to many more to come.

HI Adrienne, thanks for the encouragement! Shooting this first video was a heck of a lot of fun and I look forward to doing the next one! Once I get comfortable, look out, my corny side is bound to make an appearance :)

Yes, I really like the tabs across the top as well. I would just love to see some visual navigation button as well. Overall, the site is very tidy and well organized.

Great pickup on their blog. As a consumer site, this could be a great way to entice folks to interact. I would actually like them to do the reverse here. Write blogs that do a great job that transparently answer questions and have terrific calls-to-action on the blogs posts that entice people to participate in their trivia contest.

BTW, what program are you using for your videos? I shot this one with Camtasia for Mac.

Adam, you should try Video Communicator from Adobe. I used the cut down version called vLogIt many moons ago. It’s great because it has a TelePrompter built in, then you can drag in images, clips and titles etc. You can even green screen yourself and put some animated background in place. Makes a very professional looking video if you get it right and if you’re going to do this regularly, it’s a worthwhile investment for you :)

Hey Steffi, thanks for coming by and leaving a comment. I checked out Video Communicator. Looks very interesting! Unfortunately looks like it’s only for windows. Very tempting though!

      thanks, -Adam

Dude, this is going to a great service. And compared to the first video I ever did, it’s WAYYYYY better man. Honestly, I think the key of video is just keeping it real, pretending like the thing isn’t really there. You’re good Adam, and you’re only going to get better. And I’ll be watching in the background my friend. ;-)
